Privacy Policy

This policy covers two separate things: the SERP Checker browser extension, and this website. The extension is where most people's questions are, so it comes first.

The extension

What it never collects

SERP Checker does not collect your search queries, the pages you visit, the contents of any page, your browsing history, or your real location. It has no account system and asks for no personal details.

What it stores on your computer

The location, language and radius you pick, and your recently used locations, are saved in Chrome's extension storage. If you have Chrome sync switched on, Chrome copies them between your own devices. They are not sent to us, and we cannot read them.

The extension keeps a local count of how many times you have applied a location. It stays on your computer and is never sent anywhere; it exists so the extension can tell how much use it is getting, if you ever switch statistics on.

The extension also generates a random installation identifier. It is a random number, is not linked to you, and is only used if you switch on the optional usage statistics described below.

Optional usage statistics

Usage statistics are off by default, and the extension asks once whether you want them on. If the question and the checkbox do not appear in the side panel, statistics are switched off entirely in the version you have and nothing at all is collected.

If you do switch them on, the extension sends anonymous events to Google Analytics so we can see which features are used and where people get stuck. Those events contain:

• the random installation identifier described above, and the extension version;
• roughly how long ago you installed it and roughly how often you have used it, both as ranges rather than exact numbers;
• which kind of place you chose (country, region, city or address) and its country code;
• for a place picked from the built-in list, which entry it was. These are public names from Google's own geo-targeting list, such as "Amsterdam,North Holland,Netherlands";
• for a street address, the town and country it is in, taken from the address service's own fields. The street and the house number are never included;
• a search that matched nothing at all, as you typed it, so that the missing place can be added to the built-in list. This is sent only when the search found nothing anywhere and only when it contains no digit, because a digit means a house number;
• the radius setting, and which controls you used;
• your browser's interface language, so we can tell which translations are worth doing. This is a browser setting, not your location.

They never contain your Google search queries, the street or number of an address you typed, or exact coordinates. The extension cannot see your Google searches at all: it adds parameters to requests your browser makes and never receives the traffic. You can switch statistics off again at any time in the side panel.

Street address lookup

Searching by country, region or city works entirely offline: the list of places ships inside the extension and nothing leaves your browser.

Looking up a full street address is different. The text you type has to be sent to an address search service to be turned into coordinates. The extension asks for your permission the first time this is needed, and does not contact the service unless you grant it. By default that service is Photon, operated by komoot and built on OpenStreetMap data; its operator receives the text of your address query and your IP address. Country, region and city searches never reach it.

What it changes on Google

When it is switched on, the extension adds Google's own location parameters (uule, gl and hl) to your Google searches, so Google returns results for the place you picked. When the place is given as coordinates, it also sets the x-geo request header on those same searches, carrying the same chosen location. Both apply only to Google Search pages, and only to pages you navigate to yourself. The requests are your own, made by your own browser; nothing is proxied through us and no third party sits in between.

The extension does not change your default search engine, and does not add, remove or reorder any result.

Pages the extension opens

The extension opens a page on this site twice in its life: a welcome page when you install it, and a short survey when you remove it. Both carry the extension version in the address so we can tell which version they came from. They are ordinary visits to this website and are measured the same way as any other, described below; they carry no identifier and happen whether or not you switched statistics on.

This website

When you visit serpchecker.app, our hosting provider and Google Analytics record standard web traffic information such as your IP address, browser type, operating system and referring URL. These are used to understand traffic to the site. They are separate from the extension, which does not use them. No advertising or audience-measurement tags are loaded.

Third parties

• Google Analytics, website traffic, and extension events only if you opt in.
• Photon (komoot), street address lookup, only after you allow it.
• Google Forms, the feedback and uninstall surveys on this site, if you fill one in.

Each has its own privacy policy. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for anything unrelated to running SERP Checker.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. Changes are posted on this page with a new date at the top.
